The most common use of the .psd extension is for Photoshop raster image files. This program from Adobe is one of the most widely used image editing products for both commercial and personal applications. The Photoshop .psd structure consists of 5 sections: the header, color mode data block, image resources block, layer and mask information block, and the actual image data itself. The header specifies things like the file ID number, its version number, the number of rows and columns the image uses, its color depth, and the number of channels and bits per channel.

I really do love FileCure because it's so easy to use - you don't have to be some kind of computer guru to get just what you need!

Plug and play? Not even close. I spent a lot of time trying to get my new, so-called 'plug and play' scanner to work. I was about ready to take it back. ParetoLogic FileCure got it working and saved me a needless trip (and gas!!) back to the store.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my printer wouldn't work, a friend of mine suggested I try ParetoLogic FileCure a try. I figured it was worth a shot because I was going to have to pay for a geek anyway. I was so happy when it worked... and worked properly!

I figured the graphics card my grandson gave me was broken when I couldn't get it work on my computer. It turns out that I just didn't have the right driver. ParetoLogic FileCure got it workin.

Hello FileCure folks:
I can't thank you enough for this great product. I just bought a new Vista machine and had been having all kinds of problems. First it was my screen and once I got that fixed it was the printer . Finally, my son suggested I try your product. It worked great and continues to keep my computer working. Thanks you.

I hate paying a lot of money for anything. That's why I buy mostly used computer equipment. Last week I thought I got taken when I bought a scanner. It just would not work. ParetoLogic Driver Cure got it working. With the updates, it makes sure my stuff will keep working and that I don't have to pay more money.

I work at a school so my mom thinks I am some kind of computer whiz. I have wasted so much time trying to get her stuff to work. Our IT guy suggested I try ParetoLogic FileCure. It has been a godsend and has saved me a lot of wasted hours. My mom and I can't thank you enough.

My wife bought me a new Vista system, and ever since I have had problems with some of my hardware. I saw FileCure, and decided to give it a shot. Ever since, the Vista and my hardware have been working great. Thanks!

I upgraded my system to Vista, and my printer started to act funny. No error messages, but it just wasn't working quite right. I read that drivers could sometimes be the problem. I looked online and saw FileCure. After downloading FileCure, my printer works great. You guys rock!

The three block sections contain the information describing how to display the image, including palettes, resolution, layers, plugins, and filters. Much of this information has not been released by Adobe so as to prevent other software developers from matching their quality when displaying .psd graphics. The last section stores the individual bytes of image data in binary form.

In addition to Adobe Photoshop, .psd files can be opened by Adobe Photoshop Elements, Apple Preview, Roxio Toast, Paint Shop Pro, ACDSee Photo Manager, ACD Systems Canvas, and The Gimp Image Editor among others. Some of these also function as editors, but saving as a .psd may or may not be supported. Programs that will support saving in .psd probably will not produce an image of the same quality as Photoshop, but individual users will decide if that is an issue or not. Batch converters with .psd support include Image Converter Plus, Batch PSD to JPG, Convert PSD to JPG Software 7.0, Contenta-Converter (for Mac), and Converter 3.2 (for Linux with KDE). Conversion followed by saving to another format is the recommended method to preserve as much quality as possible. Converting from a different format to a .psd is not recommended outside of Photoshop. These files will not always render properly in Photoshop due to the limits of other programs in relation to .psd, and editing them in Photoshop might be a challenge.
Errors with .psd files are generally confined to data corruption, but other errors do occur from time to time. One of the most common is attempting to open a file that was created by another person using a customized or add-on palette. If a user doesn't have the correct palette installed in his Photoshop directory, the image may be rendered as gray scale, RGB, or even not at all. In some cases this scenario will cause a software crash which might corrupt the image file's data. If the colors of a .psd do not display properly, always check the author's palette first. In the case of data corruption errors, they are harmless to the functioning of the computer but they are unrecoverable. A new copy of the file will have to be obtained.
Design II, a Process Simulation package for Chemical and Hydrocarbon processes also uses the .psd file extension. This package uses the extension for its flow chart data files, while other pieces of the project are given different extensions. The flow charts are proprietary to the Design II software and cannot utilized by other products.
A third use of the .psd extension is with an old program called Periscope Debugger. This program was a software debugger utilized in conjunction with The Periscope Hardware Debugger to help developers find issues in their software before releasing it. The program was for use on old 386 and 468 machines and has long been out of production and support.
A fourth and final association reports an old Apple Viewer file with the .psd extension. No further details about what this file was or on what type of computer it was found are available. It is assumed the associated program is no longer available.
